King’s Rugby Players Shine in Local Derby Fixtures

The last block fixture of the main rugby season looked slightly different this time around, being the annual fixture against our nearest local rivals, and what a finish to the year it was!

There was plenty of excitement building up to the games, with all the boys anticipating the derby day with great enthusiasm.

The 2nd XV game, “Mini Modus”, certainly did not disappoint! With plenty of support for King’s over at Flagge Meadow, the boys put in an outstanding performance, their best of the year, to end up with a 22-12 win.

The Fifth Form (Y11) enjoyed a highly competitive game, being only 3-0 to King’s at half time. Our strong, physical attack continued in the second half, allowing us to extend the lead to 19 points, and strong defence meant that we came away from the game without conceding a point. King’s fielded two strong teams for the Upper Remove (Y10) games and both were able to perform well on the day and come away with convincing wins; with the A team game finishing 20-0 and the B team 52-5.

Across these five senior games, King’s scored an impressive 25 tries, whilst conceding just four.  This was a brilliant display and demonstrates the strength of King’s rugby this year.

Both Lower Remove (Y9) games on Monday were tight affairs, but unfortunately both ended in very narrow defeats. The Cinderella Ground was in use for a game for the first time, hosting both Upper Fourth (Y8) fixtures. The boys worked hard all afternoon, with everyone putting in a committed and enthusiastic shift, but we beaten by two good teams.

The Lower Fourth (Y7) matches saw some brilliant rugby played over at Oswald’s. The U12A game was a real thriller and could have gone either way at half time, but King’s proved to be the stronger team, with the score at the final whistle 30-15.

This has been a brilliant season for the rugby programme, with 14 teams representing the School and playing over 120 games and scoring 3146 points, with over 550 tries! Some of the highlights throughout the season have been that the whole of the Lower Fourth year group have been involved in multiple fixtures again this year; the U15s had a great run to get to the last 16 in the country in the National Cup; the U16s continue to impress and are into the semi-final of the North Mids Cup against Old Swinford Hospital, due to be played sometime in the New Year; and the 1st XV had a brilliant run in the National Vase, getting to the last 16 in the country.

It certainly is an exciting time to be involved in Rugby at King’s!
