Musical pride rings out across the Foundation!

Excitement levels were high this morning in anticipation of the annual King’s Orchestral Workshop Day. Children from Years 3-9 across the Foundation gathered in the theatre for a day full of musical delight. A 48 strong orchestra warmed up by looking at the repertoire for the day; Vivaldi, Telemann and James Rae all proved popular choices.

Mr Graham Gunter, who co-ordinates this event for all three schools, commented on immense progress made by the entire orchestra: to go from sight reading music at 9:30am to performance standard at 4:30pm is an impressive display of talent.

Emily from KSA explained, “For my first orchestral workshop, it was the right balance of hard work and fun!”

Tom, a music scholar currently in Year 9, has taken part in several orchestral workshop days over recent years. He performed Gabriel’s Oboe in the concert, and he also helped encourage younger players throughout the day. Tom said he particularly enjoyed making music with others.

Ben from King’s Hawford commented that he “enjoyed being in the theatre at KSW and playing alongside older children.”

Lisa Kilbey added, “It was a pleasure to conduct the wind band today; our piece Blue Strut allowed our talented young musicians to join together, share their passion for music and perform with confidence.”

The finale concert in the John Moore Theatre was a joyous occasion; the performers’ faces were full of focus and determination and the audience were treated to a wonderful variety of music. The six soloists were taken from across the Foundation and showed tremendous courage and musicianship. Congratulations go to Tom, Belinda, Michelle, Matteo, Rory and Hebe for producing such accomplished performances that inspired your fellow musicians.

With the final applause still ringing in their ears, Mr Gunter, Mr Taranczuk and Mrs Kilbey are now looking forward to the forthcoming music tour to Paris, which will be a further opportunity to share the wonderful music making that is taking place at King’s.
