Prep pupils unite for Sports Afternoon

Friday saw Prep pupils from Year 5 unite for a Sports Transition afternoon led by the King’s Worcester Games staff. It was one of a series of events put on by “Big King’s” which are designed to make the transition from Prep School to Senior School as seamless as possible. During these sessions, pupils are exposed to life in the Senior School by getting to know the campus, the facilities and the staff by whom they will be taught in the future. These sessions also provide invaluable opportunities for pupils from the Prep Schools to start to develop friendships with their peers from both Prep Schools.

The girls convened in the Senior School sports hall for an afternoon of netball. Led by the King’s Worcester Director of Sport, Lora Miller-Symonds and Senior Netball Coach, Emma McGinley, the girls warmed up with some practice drills. They then split into groups to work on specific skills including passing, marking and getting free from an opponent. It was brilliant to welcome members of the 1st VII to the session. They worked with each of the groups, sharing wisdom and knowledge. An important part of the King’s Foundation is the interaction of pupils across the different age groups. Older pupils are always on hand to help guide our younger ones and, in turn, our younger pupils take inspiration from their elders. Events such as these, alongside the Modus Cup, the Superball and the Severn Shield, help build pupil aspirations and solidify the importance of the King’s journey.

The boys’ event was held on the top field at King’s Hawford and was led by Senior School sports coach, Andy Holliday. It was a brilliant afternoon, full of excitement and learning and a great opportunity for the boys from each Prep School to get to know each other better. The focus of the session was to look at dribbling, passing, shooting and positional awareness in football. All the boys demonstrated fantastic progress throughout the afternoon.

All in all, this was a very successful afternoon of sport for our Year 5 Prep pupils. The Senior School games staff were particularly impressed with the Year 5 cohort and praised the pupils for their excellent attitudes. It is clear that there are some gifted sportsmen and women at our Prep Schools, who will no doubt flourish when they make the move to “Big King’s” in September 2024.
