Sport Round up of The Week

Monday 16th June – U10 Girls Cricket vs Blue Coat School

On Monday afternoon, the U10 girls welcomed teams from Blue Coat School for two superb cricket matches on the top field. In their match, Mr Hodgkins’s team fielded first and put on an excellent display of accurate bowling and energetic fielding against a strong Blue Coat batting line-up. Highlights of the innings included a superb catch from Valerie off the bowling of Jasmine, as well as an excellent first over from Florrie. Adelyn and Daisy also bowled with impressive economy in their overs.

The King’s Hawford run chase that followed was full of drama and excitement. The girls all demonstrated positive intent with their batting, and it was great to see some well-timed shots from Zara, Charlotte, Rosie and Maysie, adding vital runs throughout the innings. With just one over to go, and Valerie and Jasmine at the crease, the Hawford girls required eight runs to win. Following some excellent deliveries from the Blue Coat death bowler, the girls still needed seven runs with just two balls remaining of the final over. Then Valerie stepped up and dispatched both of the final two deliveries straight down the ground for four runs each, giving Hawford a one-run lead at the end of the match. A fantastic, close, competitive game played in superb spirits from both sides. A huge well done to Jasmine and Valerie who were voted bowler and batter of the match respectively.

Tuesday 17th June – U8 & U9 Cricket vs RGS The Grange

Mr Hodgkins’s U9 Team

The Year 3 and 4 children concluded their fixtures for the academic year with six cricket matches against their peers from RGS The Grange on Tuesday afternoon. Mr Hodgkins’s team enjoyed an extremely close match in which neither team could be separated. Batting first, the Hawford children were positive in their play and demonstrated superb decision-making and running between the wickets to keep the scoreboard ticking along. This had been a real target from our recent games lessons, and it was great to see the children applying it within competitive fixtures. Eleanor and Simi were the embodiment of this approach before being backed up by the powerful hitting of Billy and Tanith. Rupert, Charlie, Alice and Persie all communicated brilliantly whilst adding further important runs to the team total.

The Hawford bowling attack began their innings in a similarly energetic and enthusiastic manner. Wickets fell off the bowling of Eleanor, Tanith and Alice, including some superb fielding and a great catch from Simi. With just one over remaining, RGS required three runs to win. Tanith stepped up to bowl her second over and managed to deliver four dot balls with the other two going for just one run each. As a result, the match finished all square with both teams scoring 88 runs. The RGS players nominated Billy as batter of the match, following some well-timed shots, whilst Persie’s economical spell was rewarded by being named bowler of the match.

Miss Lakes’s U8 Team

In their final match of the season, Miss Lake’s U8 team showed great enthusiasm and determination. Chester opened the bowling with much-improved accuracy. Bonnie delivered a superb over, claiming a key wicket and restricting RGS’s scoring, while Lily impressed with two wickets of her own. RGS responded strongly in the second innings with some outstanding bowling, making runs hard to come by. Sadie and Lily capitalised on a few wide balls, while the over of the innings came from Alfie and Rupert, who made the most of some misfielding to score three runs, followed by a confident four from Rupert. RGS named Alfie as Batter of the Match and Chester as Bowler of the Match. A fantastic team effort to round off a brilliant season; our youngest players have much to be proud of!

Miss Holtham’s U 8& U9 Team

The Year 3 & 4 cricket team, captained by Connie, put in a determined and spirited performance in their last match of the season, showing great promise for the future. While the game didn’t go our way this time, there were some fantastic individual and team highlights that deserve recognition.

Batter of the Match – Isla and Ellie M

Ellie M was a standout with the bat along with Isla, showing excellent composure and growing confidence at the crease. Both played some lovely strokes and kept the scoreboard ticking over with clever running between the wickets. Both showed improvements to their skill set with timing and coordination.

Bowler of the Match – Elizabeth C

With the ball, Elizabeth led the attack with improved accuracy and effort. She delivered a consistent line and length, earning well-deserved praise from teammates and spectators alike. Her technique made her a clear choice for bowler of the match.

Fielding Highlights – Bonita-May & Ellie M

In the field, there was a fantastic partnership between Bonita-May and Ellie M. The pair worked together to cut off boundaries and stop the opposition from building momentum. Their sharp awareness and quick reactions were crucial in halting a quick succession of runs and showed how important good teamwork is in cricket.

There’s still lots to build on for next season, but the team should be proud of their efforts. With continued practice and this kind of determination, there’s no doubt exciting things lie ahead for this young group of cricketers.

Wednesday 18th June – U10 Cricket vs Winterfold

Mr Hodgkins’s U10 Team

On Wednesday afternoon, the Year 5 children rounded off their cricket fixtures for the term with matches against Winterfold. Mr Hodgkins’s team travelled away and clearly saved their best cricket of the term until the final match; they were fantastic with both bat and ball. Batting first, the children demonstrated intent and skill from the very first ball. Highlights of the innings included a superb cameo from Will, which saw him powerfully strike two fours and one six in three consecutive balls, two truly technically stunning front-foot drives from Jasmine, both finding the boundary from consecutive balls, and some excellent running and timing from Jack and Nicholas; both of whom were making their hardball debut. Hawford posted an extremely impressive total that would prove too much for the Winterfold batters.

In our bowling innings, the children bowled with pace and accuracy, keeping things tight whilst also being a constant threat to the wickets. Charles was in superb form with the gloves behind the stumps with very little getting past him. The pick of the bowlers were Daisy, who managed an impressive maiden over (the only one of the match), Freddie, who took two wickets in consecutive balls, and Arthur, who bowled with speed and accuracy, claiming two wickets and being voted player of the match.

Miss Lakes’s U10 Team

In an extremely warm final match of the season, Miss Lake’s team faced Winterfold, who, with only five players, were supported by our team lending fielders in the first innings. Batting first, our players displayed excellent technique. The standout partnership came from Austin and Louis, who struck seven fours in just three overs, racking up 42 runs. Adelyn and Maysie followed with more strong batting to boost the total. In the field, Luca led with energy and focus, setting the tone with superb, proactive fielding. Our bowlers kept Winterfold’s scoring in line, showing great control. Winterfold named Austin as Batter of the Match and Adelyn as Bowler of the Match. It was a fantastic performance from all in such challenging conditions, and a brilliant way to end a successful season. The children should be incredibly proud of their efforts.
