Foundation Cathedral Service marks start of Academic Year

On Tuesday morning, pupils from Years Three to Six joined together with their peers from across the Foundation for the Start of Term Service in Worcester Cathedral.  The service celebrated several key milestones, including the start of the academic year. For some of pupils it was their first experience of a service in the historic Cathedral.

Across the Foundation there was an air of excitement. At King’s Hawford, pupils arrived at school early and quickly boarded minibuses bound for “Big Kings”. Pupils from King’s St Alban’s carefully made their way through the Senior School campus and across College Green. For a majority of our Senior pupils, the Service was a familiar start. All of the King’s Worcester Foundation pupils were brilliant ambassadors for the Schools and behaved impeccably.

The School Chaplain, The Rev’d Dr Mark Dorsett, started the service by welcoming the whole community, celebrating the coming together of the whole King’s family and looking forwards to the year ahead. The focus of the service was on teamwork; Rev’d Dorsett spoke about the magic and satisfaction to be gleaned from working as a whole. He talked about the importance of belonging to something bigger than ourselves, and the whole being more than the sum of its parts: it was a perfect message with which to start the year.

The atmosphere within the Cathedral came alive, with congregational hymns together with the beautiful voices of the choir. It was great to see the whole Foundation join in the hymns with such gusto! The service also gave the new Senior School Heads of School the opportunity to test out their public speaking. Pupils from King’s St Alban’s and King’s Hawford also delivered confident and eloquent readings.

As the first of many opportunities that our pupils will have to be inspired by Worcester Cathedral, the service was a truly most significant occasion. We look forward to more opportunities to join together as a Foundation as the year progresses.
