OVs’ Love for Languages
It is a very exciting time for OVs Ed Wilson (Cr 05-09) and Sam Geuter (W 04-09) who have been in touch to share their news.
Ed and Sam, while living and working in different countries, have collaborated to produce a new language app, Linguini. The app focuses on teaching Spanish and takes a new approach to learning for their target audience of linguists that are 17+ years old: The content aims to reflect real life with a range of topics, from office gossip, to first dates, to current affairs, via the use of flashcards.
Currently available for iPhone users, Ed and Sam’s plans include expanding to an Android version and, in due course, launching more languages. They would, though, hugely appreciate OVs’ thoughts on the content, so if you’re studying Spanish at university, or indeed planning a work trip where speaking Spanish could be invaluable, do take a look and feedback via alumni@ksw.org.uk. The app can be downloaded for free via the iOS app store (the web developer named on the store, Marlon Huber-Smith, is developing the app with Ed and Sam).
Sam and Ed added, “Our friendship, and our journey with languages, started at King’s. We both went on to study modern languages at university and have been lucky to be able to use our skills in life and work. We know how tricky it can be getting to grips with colloquialisms or local nuances, and from our own research we have found this is a common challenge for serious language learners.
“With Linguini we want to make it easy to keep up with a language, and help people unlock that next level of everyday fluency. To do this we are involving the language learning community at every step of the development process and are already busy testing new features and content!”
