Amazing Aquatic Art at the Commonwealth Games

Congratulations to OV and artist Georgia Tucker (Br 7-14), whose latest work, Fluitō, was created as part of the Commonwealth Games celebrations.

Georgia Tucker Fluito

Fluitō is an ambitious interactive outdoor public art installation, highlighting the positive mental impact that swimming has on people’s lives and exploring important social and environmental issues such as the inequalities faced by swimmers throughout the Commonwealth, and ocean pollution. Using digital projections, soundscapes and film, Georgia created a virtual experience that immersed the viewer and allowed them to escape into a watery world. Through the work she examines the way swimming has an impact on people’s lives, professionally and competitively but also socially, as a way to connect with others or meditate in solitude. The work included a soundscape that incorporated first-hand interviews with communities and individuals whose lives are positively affected by swimming. Created as part of The Birmingham 2022 Festival, the huge installation was based in Sandwell Valley Country Park, and open throughout the duration of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Georgia explained, “Climate anxiety can leave people feeling overwhelmed rather than inspired to change. The experience of Fluitō is playful and memorable and, although people do need to alter their behaviours, I wanted to showcase that there is beauty in the future and a purpose to changing.”

Fluitō is one of the first projects Georgia has produced since successfully completing her Fine Art MA at Birmingham School of Art in 2021 and follows on from her acclaimed Advena project, staged at the prestigious W Hotel in London’s Leicester Square.
