Generations of OVs Come Together at the 123rd Annual OV Dinner

College Hall once again provided the memorable setting for one of the highlights of the OV calendar, as OVs from across the generations gathered for the 123rd Annual OV Dinner this month.

From the moment the OVs and Hon OVs arrived, there was a real sense of anticipation as old friends were reunited and conversations quickly turned to memories of their time at King’s. With year groups represented across decades, and some favourite former teachers present, the evening was a wonderful illustration of the lasting friendships and connections that form such an important part of the OV community.

Keeping the evening moving was OV Nick Stephens (Br 77-84 and Old Hawfordian), who once again took on the role of Compère. Among the evening’s traditions was the presentation of the Chappel Award to OV Tim Richardson (Ca 40-49) as the most senior OV in attendance, in attestation of his valued support. OV The Right Reverend Dr Mark Gretason (Cr 66-76) kindly said Grace before the meal began.

The dinner provided an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable breadth of the OV community, with contributions from OVs representing very different eras of School history. OVs Charles White (Ca 71-76), represented the largest cohort present: the Year of 1976, and Josh Hand (Cl 91-01) spoke on behalf of the Year of 2001, and each shared their experiences and reflections with the gathering. Their speeches highlighted both the changes that have taken place at King’s over the years and the many things that remain constant.

Head of Foundation Ben Charles also spoke during the evening, adding his own perspective on the relationship between the School and its OVs. His words reinforced the importance of maintaining those connections and ensuring that all former pupils continue to feel part of the King’s community.

Alongside the speeches and formalities, the evening was, as ever, about people. College Hall was filled with stories, laughter and reminiscence as OVs caught up with old classmates and met members of generations they might otherwise never have crossed paths with.

The celebrations continued the following morning with the Eucharist at Worcester Cathedral. OV Alec Mackie (Cl 47-56) and Ben Charles represented the School and served as readers, providing a fitting opportunity to pause and reflect following an evening centred on friendship, community and tradition.

The 123rd Annual OV Dinner was a fitting reminder that while generations of OVs may have very different memories of their school days, the sense of belonging to the wider King’s community continues long after leaving School.
