King’s Debaters reach Grand Finals at Nationals
The King’s Worcester senior debating team consisting of Becky Y, Liam R and George C have had an incredibly successful year.
The English-Speaking Union Mace debating competition began in October and finally culminated in the grand final on Monday 27th March. Having got to the finals stage in three out of the last four years, there was a lot of pressure to do well again, in what would be their last appearance in the competition before the Sixth Formers leave for university.
The students competed through a range of rounds at the local, regional and finally national levels and covered a wide range of issues from reforming the justice system, and medical ethics through to the right of protestors to destroy property.
The team eventually won their way through to the National Finals in London. This stage consisted of the 12 best debating schools in the country and, as always, was fiercely fought and highly competitive.
The King’s team: proposing that key medical decisions should be left to medical professionals and not parents were able to advance through to the Grand Final after defeating Radley College and Manchester Grammar amongst others.
The Final was streamed live and fought between us and St Paul’s Girls School, London. Although well-matched the girls from St. Pauls eventually triumphed.
Despite the defeat, the King’s team won a lot of plaudits for their skill and should feel enormously proud of their achievements this year.
