Modus Cup 2022
After a thrilling game and strong performances from both sides, RGS Worcester won back the Modus Cup for the first time since 2018.
Supporters from across the whole King’s Foundation packed into the East Stand at Sixways Stadium as captain Laurie Checkley led out the team in the rain for the 15th Modus Challenge Cup. Since the first Modus Challenge Cup in 2007, King’s have won the trophy eight times and RGS Worcester six.
RGS opened the scoring, racing into a 10-0 lead. King’s soon answered through a fantastic try in the corner from winger Joe Ward, which was superbly converted by George Tomlinson. George, then kicked another three points, making the match all square going into the second half. King’s started the second half strong, adding further to the scoreboard after a try from captain Laurie Checkley. George converted and made the score 17-10 to King’s, having been down 10-0 at the start of the game.
Unfortunately, King’s conceded a penalty giving RGS the opportunity for three more points. With only four minutes to play, RGS scored in the corner, and the conversion put them 20-17 up. In the final moments, King’s were thrown a lifeline and George T stepped up to take the penalty kick. Unfortunately, the wind wasn’t on his side and the kick was not successful, snatching the chance of a draw away. All in all, it was an enthralling final few minutes. At the final whistle, RGS celebrated reclaiming the Modus Challenge Cup after four years.
King’s Foundation Director of Sport, Jonny Mason, said, “Both teams played some great rugby in damp conditions, making for an exciting and enjoyable game. Despite the final score not being in our favour, we enjoyed some exceptional highlights and I’m incredibly proud of the way in which the team pulled together. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough on the night, and we’d like to offer our congratulations to RGS on their win.”
