OV Lizzy’s Career is Better by Design

It was such a pleasure to welcome OV Lizzy Bennett (Ch 08-10) back to King’s in February for a tour around the School.

Lizzy has had a very interesting and varied career to date, more of which you can read here, and remembered her time at the School with real fondness, particularly the DT block.

She joined King’s in the Sixth Form, and her love for DT blossomed; it was a subject she had not been able to take at her previous school. Lizzy recalled the hours she would spend making best use of the tools and equipment, often being the last student to leave the school site. Lizzy spent some time with Head of DT, Chris Wilson (Hon OV) and DT Technician, Julie Palmer (Hon OV), reminiscing about the time when Lizzy was at King’s, remembering their enjoyable days in the DT Block. Lizzy was delighted to see how the department continues to evolve and now includes a plethora of 3D printers, with a metal cutter joining the much loved laser cutter to help today’s pupils produce precision work.

The Keyes Building was just starting to rise from the ground when Lizzy was at King’s, and she was very impressed with what the building now offers the School. The John Moore Theatre was the next stop, which brought back some wonderful memories for Lizzy of her time ‘treading the boards’ in the School Production of West Side Story.

Lizzy’s nostalgia was further fuelled in Choir House. Here, Lizzy found what had been her House Room, and although she was sad to see that it is now an office, that did not detract from the great memories. Lizzy even took a photo to share with her Choir House cohort, who are still great friends.

In College Hall, Lizzy recalled her time playing the grand piano and the incredible acoustics. She also remembered how each school day started with an Assembly in College Hall.

Speaking about her time at King’s, Lizzy said, “The award-winning project and design skills I learned through my DT A-Level set me up for the project that has been pivotal to my career: being able to present my design, competently demonstrate the concept and its development, and to deftly explain how the design works. I would not be where I am today without these skills and for that I am very grateful, especially to Chris Wilson for all of his support during my time at King’s.”
