OVs at the Sundog Sevens

Many thanks to OV George Bates (K 11-18) for this fantastic match report from the recent Sundogs Festival Rugby 7s tournament:

“On Saturday 18th June 2022, after three years of postponement due to COVID-19, an OV Rugby 7s team finally competed at the Sundogs Festival held at Luctonians Rugby Club. Despite the festival’s optimistic name, the weather was wet and windy, preventing any team from playing with the flair and speed usually associated with Sevens.

“Our first game of the day came against the home favourites and eventual Competitive Competition winners, Red Rooster 7s. Nevertheless, our team of only eight quickly became the talk of the tournament through our committed defence and dangerous attack, which saw Max Richardson (W 14-09) contribute two of the best tackles of the tournament and Owen Preston (Cr 14-21) finish a well-worked team try. Unfortunately, we still went down 25-5 at the final whistle.

“The second game of the day came in quick succession and was more of a disappointment, due to a few unfortunate bounces of the ball and fatigue coming into play against a team who were not much better than ourselves. The game ended 23-5. We then gained a bye in the next game due to the opposition unfortunately sustaining multiple injuries.

“Our final game of the day came against an old foe, the Petelo All-Stars. In 2019 the All-Stars knocked us out of the semi-finals of the same competition, going on to win in the final. However, three years on both teams were much changed and engaged in an extremely physical match. The first half saw the opposition go ahead 19-0, thanks to some explosive attack and sloppy defending on our part. Still, the determination and never-give up attitude that Mr Mason (Hon OV) has made typical of a King’s rugby team shone through, with two quick tries in our favour. The All-Stars would respond but not before Aston Campbell-Kerr (Br 14-21) caught his own chip over the defence and ran the length of the pitch. We won the second half 17-7, but it wasn’t enough as we lost 26-17 to the eventual tournament runners up.

“Overall, it was a very tough day; the weather was against us and, with last minute injuries and mishaps preventing us from having a full team, we certainly struggled with fatigue. But we played some high-quality Sevens, scoring great individual and team tries in the process against teams filled with Nat 2 semi-professionals and Fijians plying their rugby trade in the UK for the summer. I would like to offer my thanks to all who took part in the tournament and made it a very memorable and enjoyable day. Until next year….”
