OV’s Wunderbar Visit

On Tuesday 20 September 2022, the current King’s Sixth Form Germanists had a surprise visit from OV Fred Cronin (Ch 11-18 and King’s St Alban’s).

Fred took some time out from his visit home to pop in to see the A Level students and have a chat about his experiences with languages, from when he started at King’s St Alban’s through ‘big’ King’s and A Levels, onwards to University and with his current job: an internship with a firm that specialises in corporate investigations around the world.

He explained a pivotal moment for him was the German A Level Berlin Trip when he was in Lower Sixth. He enjoyed the experience so much that he returned a number of times, and it sparked a love of the language which is still with him. He was delighted to learn that, after a hiatus due to COVID, the Berlin trip is back in planning stages!

Giving his top tips to the languages students, Fred said, “Travel as much as possible and as much as your family and circumstances allow. Also, watch TV in different languages, just listen to as much as you can, even if you don’t think you can understand it all.”

Richard Ball (Hon OV), Head of Modern Foreign Languages, added, “Languages are so incredibly helpful in all aspects of life and work. Many thanks to Fred for taking the time to join our current Sixth Form for ‘Movie Night’ and have a chat with them about his experiences with languages, both at King’s and beyond.”
