Sixth Form Students Conquer Gold Duke of Edinburgh Expedition

A resilient group of 25 Lower Sixth students successfully completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition in the Lake District during August. Following their practice expedition in Snowdonia in April, students were well prepared for the challenge, but after weeks of cloudless skies and tinder-dry conditions in Worcester, participants quickly discovered the realities of the Lake District’s famously changeable weather, with full waterproofs proving essential.

The expedition involved four groups, supported by five members of staff from KSW and KH. Over four days, students travelled through the Northern Lakes, starting near Crummock Water before making their way towards Borrowdale, Thirlmere, Ullswater and finally Askham. Each day involved around 8–9 hours of walking, with groups tackling approximately 1,000 metres of ascent while carrying everything they needed for the four days.

Navigation skills were put to the test as groups crossed high ridges and peaks in low cloud, while the challenging terrain and heavy backpacks presented a significant physical and mental test. Despite the demanding conditions, spirits remained high throughout. When the clouds lifted, students were rewarded with spectacular views across the fells, and evenings spent together at camp were a particular highlight for many.

The expedition required determination, teamwork and self-reliance, making its successful completion a tremendous achievement. Congratulations to all involved.

In addition to the expedition, Gold participants must complete a Residential section, which involves spending at least five days away from home taking part in a shared activity with people they have not previously met. This summer, 16 students have completed Residential experiences ranging from sailing, cookery and wildlife conservation courses to programmes with the emergency services, military training experiences, surfing, rowing and water sports camps.

These opportunities have enabled participants to develop new skills, broaden their horizons and build lasting friendships while working towards the completion of their Gold Award.
