This Week in Cricket: Fixture Highlights and Match Moments
This week saw another exciting round of cricket fixtures, with pupils showcasing great skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship on the pitch. From close-run matches to standout performances, our teams represented the school with pride and enthusiasm. Here’s a look at the week’s cricketing action and results.
Tuesday 6th May U9/8 v Winterfold
In Tuesday’s exciting U9/8 cricket fixture against Winterfold, Haadi led the team with great enthusiasm and strategic thinking. Winning the toss, Haadi decided to put Winterfold in to bat first, setting the stage for a competitive match. Coming off the back of last week’s impressive performance, the team was eager to continue their momentum and showcase their skills. Our bowlers did not disappoint, delivering a strong performance and maintaining tight fielding to restrict Winterfold to a total of 263 runs. Monty, Matthew, and Haadi each claimed a wicket, with Haadi standing out as the pick of the bowlers. He bowled two overs, conceding only 5 runs and taking a crucial wicket. With a gettable target in sight, our team went into bat with confidence. However, we faced challenges in communication and running between the wickets. The slower outfield this week also made it difficult to build our run rate. Despite these hurdles, Matthew and Monty managed to hit two lovely boundaries each. Monty, in particular, delivered the shot of the day, flicking the ball off his front foot for a beautiful four. Haadi was named the Bowling Player of the Match for his economical and effective bowling, while Monty earned the Batting Player of the Match for his impressive range of shots.
The team once against played well and showed great potential and will undoubtedly continue to improve in the upcoming fixtures.
U9/8 v Winterfold
Tuesday saw a beautiful afternoon for our year threes and fours to continue their learning journey in cricket. Poppy won the toss and we elected to bowl. Everyone made a good effort with overarm bowling, with Harvey and Max managing the most consistency getting the ball straight. Tiegan and Jeremiah did well behind the stumps, stopping any balls that beat the bat. When we swapped over, everyone managed to get bat on ball, with George, Gabe and Sophie, in particular hitting some nice shots. Another excellent afternoon of cricket.
U9/8 v Winterfold
On Tuesday afternoon, the U8/U9 cricket teams played an exciting match against Winterfold. It was a closely fought contest, with both teams showing great energy and determination. Our players batted with confidence and fielded with enthusiasm, but a little more work is needed on bowling accurately, as a few extra runs slipped through. Special mention goes to Daisy for leading her team brilliantly, offering encouragement and making thoughtful decisions throughout the game. Although we lost by 18 runs, the children should be proud of their efforts and teamwork. It was a valuable learning experience and an enjoyable afternoon.
U9/8 v RGS Springfield
On Tuesday, the Year 3 and 4 pupils travelled to Springfield to play a pairs cricket match. After a good warm-up session, the team was full of energy and excited to get started. Our bowling showed real progress, with marked improvement over the past few weeks. A big well done to Hugo, Mason, and Archie M, who each took a wicket. By the end of their innings, Springfield had scored 269 runs.
Batting was the standout part of our game. Special mention to Savannah and Madie for their confident calling and communication between the wickets. Charlie and Hugo put in a fantastic performance, scoring an impressive 49 runs in just three overs. We ended the match with a strong final score of 316 runs. Well done to the whole team for their excellent performance and teamwork!
U9/8 v RGS Springfield
On Tuesday afternoon, a group of enthusiastic pupils from King’s St. Alban’s made the short journey along The Tything to face RGS Springfield in what turned out to be a memorable afternoon of cricket.
The team, consisting of; Iris, Amber, Daniel, Nell, Rudy and Milan took part in a friendly game of pairs cricket played in an excellent spirit. Batting first, the St. Alban’s pairs each contributed valuable runs to the team total. Amber and Iris opened with 5 runs from their two overs, followed by Nell and Milan who also added 5. Rudy and Daniel rounded off the innings with a solid partnership, scoring 7 runs, including the team’s only boundary – an impressive four struck by Daniel.
In the field, the team showed great determination, working hard to limit extras and keep the opposition’s run tally down. Their accuracy and teamwork in the bowling department were commendable and contributed to an evenly contested match.
With some time remaining after the initial fixture, the children enjoyed a second, shorter development match. During this game, teachers from both schools offered guidance and feedback in a match setting, which the children found both enjoyable and educational. The session provided a valuable opportunity for the players to refine their skills in a relaxed, supportive environment.
This fixture was particularly poignant, as it marked the final sporting encounter between the two schools, with RGS Springfield set to become a nursery from September. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to RGS Springfield for their warm hospitality on the day and for the many enjoyable fixtures shared over the years. It has been a pleasure to compete and collaborate, and we wish them good luck for the future.

When it was their turn to bat, King’s found it more difficult to make solid contact with the ball, as many deliveries were wide or bounced low.
