Rowing for Gold(ie)

Many congratulations to OV Luke Beever (S 15-22), who was selected for Cambridge’s Reserve Crew, Goldie, racing in the annual Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race 2023, which then went on to beat Oxford’s Isis crew by one length.

Luke shared his thoughts on both his selection and the victory:

“After an extremely rigorous selection process, learning that I had got a seat in Goldie was both extremely exciting and also a little daunting. As the days and weeks counted down, the reality of the race set in more and more.

“I was grateful for all the support I received from the King’s community and chuffed that the rowing coaches were cheering me on via the live stream on the day. I owe them so much, as King’s is where my journey in this sport began.

“On the day itself, I had never felt nerves like it, especially whilst I was sitting on the start line. The noise was deafening whilst boating, warming up and racing: there was a constant stream of cheering and yelling.

“The race itself was one of the most mentally and physically demanding things I have ever done. Nothing prepares you for the side-by-side, gladiatorial-style battle.

“Crossing the finish line first was probably the best feeling I have ever had. It was an immense feeling of joy, elation, and relief.”

King’s Head of Rowing, Jim Chalmers (Hon OV), added, “It is rare for an undergraduate to be selected for this crew, which is real credit to Luke and his hard work. To then take home a win as well is a fantastic achievement, and one which Luke will remember for a long time.”
