Building Businesses with OV John Foley

We have been treated to a fantastic day courtesy of OV John Foley (Cl 64-74). John is a highly successful businessman and we were very fortunate that he was able to volunteer his time to visit King’s. John is currently Chairman of and an investor in 3 public companies all of which are quoted on the London Stock Exchange's AIM (Alternative Investment Market) and also Chairman of a large privately owned international recruitment business. John was previously Chief Executive of 2 public companies for 15 years and grew one from a business employing 50 people to one employing 15,000 people when it was sold.

John had a busy morning meeting Headmaster, Matthew Armstrong and Chair of Development Trust, Andrew Reekes followed by a visit to the school Archive with Development Director Liz Elliott before an even busier afternoon meeting pupils. First he met with the MDs of the school Young Enterprise to offer advice and encouragement and then he gave a talk to pupils about what it is like working in business with key tips including to lead by example, build successful teams of managers, don’t count your success but learn from your failures and what is the point in looking backwards?

Musical memories

It was a great pleasure to welcome OV Andrew Millington (Cr 68-70) as the examiner for ABRSM exams this week. Andrew has spent 40 years in Cathedral music and recently retired as Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral after 16 years. Prior to that he held the same post at Guildford Cathedral and was Assistant Organist at Gloucester Cathedral.

Andrew has travelled the world as an organist and choral conductor and made many recordings. In addition he has appeared regularly on BBC Radio 3 and 4 and his choristers have performed at the BBC Proms with the BBC Singers. Andrew was a pupil at King’s when the organ in College Hall was installed and he had a few nostalgic moments playing this instrument during his visit. The Big Debate

It was wonderful to have OV Tom Kelly (W 10-17) back to King’s this week to adjudicate for the inter-house debating competition in College Hall. Tom is currently studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Liverpool.  Well done to Wulstan house who were victorious.
