Canterbury Calling

It gives us great pleasure to share the news that OV Dr David Newsholme (Os 93-03) has been appointed Director of Music at Canterbury Cathedral.

David was unanimously chosen from a field of over 45 highly qualified applicants, testament to both his musical and leadership talents. The role encompasses all musical aspects of the Cathedral’s work, as well as being responsible for training the Cathedral’s choirs.

David’s musical career encompasses not only choral and orchestral conducting, but he is also an experienced organ soloist, accompanist and ensemble player. Additionally, in 2014, David founded Canterbury Cathedral’s Girls’ Choir from scratch and through his continued leadership has established a critically-acclaimed international ensemble.

David added, “I’ve known that I’ve wanted to work with choirs since I joined Worcester Cathedral as a chorister at the age of 8. My love of choral music was further nurtured through the rich musical experiences which I was privileged to encounter at King’s School Worcester. The opportunity to conduct the Keys Choir (as the pupil-led chamber choir was then called) was formative; I benefited greatly from the wealth of knowledge, expertise, and sheer enthusiasm of the then Director of Music, Mr David Brookshaw.

“I’m thrilled and humbled to be appointed to this prestigious position in Canterbury, and will always be grateful both to the Cathedral and to the King’s School Worcester for setting me on my way.”
