Cricket at King’s and the Peter Iddon Bursary Award

Cricket at King’s School has, for a long time, been an intrinsic part of the Sports curriculum and the School is rightly proud of its impressive performance on the cricket field as well as the strong membership of the OV Cricket teams.  We were delighted to read a feature written by King’s Director of Cricket, Simon Greenall for ‘The Cricketer, Schools Guide 2021, in which he mentions a number of well-known cricketing OVs.  You can read the entry for The King’s School Worcester on page 86, here. And if you are interested in playing for the OV cricket team, please get in touch with us on  and we can direct you to the relevant person in charge.

In 2019 a number of OVs approached the Development & Alumni Relations office to ask if they could create a bursary for a young child who showed academic potential as well as impressive cricketing ability, in memory of former teacher and Master in Charge of Cricket, Hon OV Peter Iddon.  Peter’s death in 2016 was a shock to so many people who knew him and had been taught by him, or who had been in Hostel House under his care.  The Peter Iddon Bursary Award has been strongly supported by OVs, Hon OVs and friends of the Iddon family and is well on the way to financing a bursary place at King’s.  If you are interested in getting involved and supporting this poignant award, please do get in touch.

The Iddon family have written the following message to those who are already supporting the bursary in Peter’s name, and to those who may be considering offering their support:

The Iddon family is extremely touched by and grateful for the generosity already shown by so many in support of The Peter Iddon Cricket Bursary, established last year by the OV community in memory of a dear friend, colleague, father and husband.

Cricket at King’s has a long tradition of success and coaching is of a very high standard. In his role as First XI cricket coach, for which he is best remembered by many, Peter advocated the participation of female pupils and introduced an international touring programme – opportunities that continue to add to the dynamism and popularity of the sport at King’s today.

Created in recognition of Peter’s dedication to King’s, the Bursary will support a child recognised for his or her cricketing talent, who, in the spirit of King’s, would also contribute to the life of the school and benefit from all it has to offer. We know that an opportunity for such a candidate would have been wholeheartedly endorsed by Peter, whose time at King’s as housemaster, English teacher and cricket coach was testament to his all-round commitment to the school.

We would like to take this opportunity to encourage all those who wish to support this initiative to do so through the Development Office, so that we can achieve the amount needed to fund this bursary. For more information about this bursary and how you can offer your support, please contact Liz Elliott on 01905 721719 or by email on

Your support is hugely appreciated, and we look forward to seeing this opportunity come to fruition.

 Anita, Kate and Harry Iddon.
