Congratulations to OV Ellie Driver (Os 13-20 and King’s Hawford) who, with her father Jim, sailed to victory in the Morgan Cup in their Sun Fast 3300, Chilli Pepper. Sailing double handed, they triumphed in a very competitive fleet of 40 boats, which included fully-crewed vessels and Olympic sailors.
The Royal Ocean Racing Club’s (RORC) Morgan Cup race is a 120 mile offshore race from Cowes on the Isle of Wight to Dartmouth. The double handed class is particularly competitive. With light winds overnight Chilli Pepper and Rockit ,sailed by Shirley Robertson (Double Olympic gold medallist) and Dee Caffari (professional offshore sailor), broke from the main group and raced competitively towards Dartmouth. After 19 hours of racing, Ellie and Jim won by just 35 seconds. They secured a clean sweep of the Morgan Cup, winning the IRC 2 Class, Double Handed and IRC overall.
Commenting on the race, Ellie said, “We have had some close RORC races where we have lost out in the last couple of miles, so it is really rewarding to put it all together in this race and keep going to the end.
“We trust the boat and we knew it could handle the strong breeze at the finish. To catch up we had to do something different and hoisting the kite was the difference; we had the most amazing run to the finish, blast reaching towards Dartmouth at 18 knots.”
The target now is the 1800nm Round Britain and Ireland race in August. You can follow their progress on Facebook @ChilliPepperRacing.
