Where Can English Take You?

As many OVs will know, it can sometimes be difficult to see how the study of a subject at both school and at a higher level will open doors to opportunities in the world of work. We were delighted therefore to welcome students and three OVs to our first virtual careers evening on Monday 19th October with a special focus on English. This event was hosted by Head of Careers, Helen Airdrie and compèred by Head of English, Andrew Maund (Hon OV). It was great to have OVs involved who could share their personal experiences of using their English qualifications in their professions.

Tim Summers (Br 87-92) followed his English studies at university with a conversion into Law and subsequently exercised his entrepreneurial spirit by setting up his own legal practice.

Content marketing manager Rosie Pugh (Cl 04-11) provided an illuminating insight into the work of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and showed us how you can combine a passion for creative writing with a digital career that will continue to be in demand for the foreseeable future.

Emmie Le Marchand (Cl 03-10) demonstrated the value of English skills in her work as a litigation lawyer and shared with us the breadth and depth of her career journey to date

It was inspiring to hear their insights and we are very grateful for the enthusiasm and generous donation of their time to the benefit of King’s current students.
