OV Selected for Junior Hockey World Cup

Many congratulations to OV Amy Hughes (Br 16-23 and Old St Alban’s), who has been selected to represent Wales at the 2025 Junior World Cup in Chile in December – a tournament that only takes place once every four years. Amy, who is a goalkeeper for the Wales U21 Women’s Hockey Squad, said, “This is a huge achievement and one of the proudest moments of my sporting career so far. To be able to compete on the world stage is a dream come true, and I am so grateful for the support and foundations that King’s gave me on this journey.”

The team secured their place at the 2025 Junior World Cup following an historic victory at the EuroHockey U21 II-A Championships in July last year. Amy and her squad’s World Cup group stage will see them facing Argentina, Belgium and Zimbabwe in Chile.

Amy’s Hockey career began at King’s St Alban’s, where she was encouraged into sport by Mrs Clarke (Hon OV). This support continued to develop through the senior school under the guidance of King’s Director of Sport, Lora Miller-Symonds (Hon OV) and Foundation Director of Sport, Jonny Mason (Hon OV). Amy continued, “The encouragement, coaching and opportunities I received at King’s were instrumental in shaping me into the player I am today, and I carry those lessons with me every time I step onto the pitch.”

The squad will fly to Chile at the end of November, ready for the World Cup in December. Hockey Wales has launched a crowdfunding campaign, in partnership with Sport Wales and Crowdfunder UK, to raise the funds needed for the U21 squad to perform at this prestigious tournament, more details about which can be found via the Hockey Wales website.
