Supporting Malvern St James Families

We are sorry to hear the news regarding Malvern St James School and recognise how difficult and unsettling this will be for its community.

The King’s Worcester Foundation wishes to offer a supportive and practical conversation to MSJ families who may be considering their next steps for September. Where appropriate, we would be happy to discuss potential places across our schools and to answer any questions.

Contact us confidentially to arrange a conversation.

Year 5 Reading Challenge: Building Towers of Books!

Both Year 5 classes have been busy diving into their books this term as part of an exciting Reading Challenge. Every time a child finishes a book, the spine is photocopied and added to a growing “pile of books” displayed on their classroom door. The challenge? To see if the pile can grow as tall as Mrs Hand in 5HR and Mrs Etherington in 5E.

The children aren’t just reading, they are also talking thoughtfully about their books. They have been asked questions such as:

  • Did you enjoy the story, and why?
  • Would you like to be a character in the book?
  • Would you recommend it to a friend?

Their answers show how much they are engaging with their stories, reflecting on what they’ve read and sharing their opinions with classmates.

A lively discussion also took place about whether it’s better to read lots of shorter books, fewer longer ones, or whether it makes no difference at all. The children gave their ideas and the teachers reminded them that the most important thing is to enjoy reading and explore different genres. From fantasy to adventure, history to humour, everyone is encouraged to try something new.

The Year 5 classrooms are already looking colourful with their book towers steadily climbing higher each week. We can’t wait to see if they manage to reach the height of their teachers before the end of the Autumn Term!
