Exploring Tropical Rainforests in Year 5

This term in Geography, Year 5 pupils have been learning all about tropical rainforests. As part of their studies, they completed an exciting rainforest homework project which combined Geography, Maths, English, and Art activities linked to the topic. Pupils produced some fantastic work and showed great creativity and effort throughout the project.

In lessons, pupils explored where rainforests are located around the world and learned about the different layers of the rainforest, including the emergent layer, canopy, understory, and forest floor. They also investigated how plants and animals adapt to survive in the hot and wet rainforest environment.

Pupils researched a range of fascinating adaptations, including drip-tip and waxy leaves that help plants shed heavy rainfall, lianas that climb towards sunlight, and epiphytes and bromeliads that grow high in the canopy to collect water and reach light. They also discovered how large rainforest trees use buttress roots for support in shallow soil conditions.

To showcase their learning, the class created colourful and informative posters filled with facts, diagrams, and thoughtful explanations. The pupils demonstrated excellent research skills and creativity throughout and should be very proud of all they have achieved.
