A Night of Music and Inspiration: Year 5 & Year 6 Perform The Armed Man

Year 5 and Year 6 have shown extraordinary dedication throughout this term as they worked to learn Karl Jenkins’ powerful and moving work, The Armed Man. Embracing every challenge, from tackling complex harmonies to singing in several different languages. the children approached the project with the trademark KSA “get stuck in” attitude, and their hard work was clear for all to hear.

Before the final performance, the pupils began their musical journey with an inspiring composition workshop led by the concert’s conductor, Christopher Monks, and joined virtually by acclaimed composer Andrew Wainwright, whose piece premiered during the evening. The workshop invited the children to explore The Armed Man not only as performers but as young composers. Through thoughtful discussion and careful listening, they considered its themes of conflict, humanity, peace, and hope, gaining a deeper understanding of the meaning behind the music.

Their professionalism continued into the afternoon as they took part in their first-ever professional rehearsal with the Armonico Consort. a distinguished group of instrumentalists and singers. Despite the length and intensity of the rehearsal, the children remained focused, resilient, and enthusiastic, impressing everyone with their commitment and superb singing. By the end, they were more than ready for a well-deserved rest and a delicious school tea before returning to the Cathedral.

And then came the moment they had worked so hard for.

Performing this haunting and evocative music in a packed Worcester Cathedral, accompanied by a professional orchestra, was an experience they will treasure forever. The atmosphere was electric, and the pupils gave the performance everything they had. Their voices soared, their confidence shone, and they did themselves and their school immensely proud.

A special congratulations must also go to our competition winners: Kasvika, Joshua, Hannah, Thea, Cerys, and Martha, who delivered their prayers and poems with beauty and poise. We were especially thrilled for Poppy, who had the rare and unforgettable honour of hearing her own poem set to music and sung by professional soloists.

This was an extraordinary evening, a true celebration of music, creativity, and community and undoubtedly a highlight of our musical year so far.

Well done to all of our talented pupils. You have done KSA proud!
