Bridging Cultures at KSA
Children across the School embraced the opportunity to enjoy an exciting language learning and cultural enrichment visit from eight exchange students, visiting from Worcester’s twin town, Le Vésinet, near Paris.
In partnership with KSW, the exchange students from Lycée Alain spent time at King’s St Alban’s, learning alongside the children, joining in with lessons and also teaching the children some key French Christmas vocabulary. Welcoming native speakers to our classrooms brought our French curriculum alive! The visitors helped older children in Years Five and Six to improve pronunciation, vocabulary and fluency, and younger children enjoyed learning a French Christmas song, and listened to individuals sharing stories about how their families celebrate Christmas and the various traditions involved. Our visitors brimmed over with confidence and enthused our children, who all engaged most empathically. We know that building such connections will have a lasting impact on all of those involved.
At KSA we believe that introducing children to the French language at an early age offers numerous benefits and opportunities: learning a second language has been shown to enhance cognitive skills, problem solving and critical thinking, and linguistic skills are key to communication and a vital preparation for life in the workplace.
Our French curriculum is taught by a subject specialist from Nursery through to Year Six and French lessons are creative, fast-paced, highly interactive and great fun! Our youngest children join in with French games and action songs, which help them to develop memory, focus and attention span. As children progress through the School, a greater emphasis is placed on learning new vocabulary, through focused listening tasks, reading and simple writing activities. In addition to learning simple conversational skills, topics are based upon everyday life experiences: family, hobbies, food and animals.
Developing our children’s cultural awareness is a key area of the French curriculum; indeed, learning any foreign language helps children gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for different cultures, customs and traditions.
In today’s increasingly interconnected world, cultural exchange programmes have become invaluable, and at King’s Worcester we are proud to offer regular exchange visits to France, Spain and Germany. Typically, these take place for pupils in Years 10 to 13, and this visit by eight Year 12 French pupils from Le Vésinet has been a new addition to our programme. Our pupils will travel to Paris on Friday and stay with their partners, attending lessons with them, practising their French and discovering the cultural delights of Paris. By embracing such exchange programmes, King’s provides pupils with opportunities to broaden their perspectives, develop intercultural skills and become open-minded, global citizens.
