U9/8 Cricket v The Downs Malvern

On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of umpiring this wonderful school cricket team. It was my first time working with this group this year, and I was genuinely impressed by the remarkable improvement they’ve made over the term.

Rudy captained the side and confidently won the toss, choosing to field first. Our bowling performance was outstanding, conceding only 8 extras from 60 balls, an excellent achievement for this age group. Poppy and Iris stood out as bowlers of the match, each delivering two exceptional overs with accuracy and control.

In the field, Milan led by example with his energy and awareness, consistently tracking the ball and getting it back to the stumps quickly. As a result of our disciplined fielding and tight bowling, we restricted the opposition to just 33 runs and claimed 5 wickets.

Our batting innings was equally impressive. Boundaries were struck by Milan, Tiegan, Jeremiah, George, and Nell, showcasing a confident and aggressive approach at the crease. The running between wickets has improved significantly, with just one wicket lost to a run-out.

My batters of the match were Nell, for her two superb pull shots that raced to the boundary, and George, who also hit two fours one of which was a beautiful straight drive over the bowler’s head.

We finished with a well-deserved 47 runs, losing only 2 wickets. A fantastic all-round team performance, well played, everyone!

On Wednesday, the King’s St Alban’s U11/10 cricket team faced The Elms in a competitive fixture. After being put into bat first, we found ourselves under early pressure, losing two quick wickets that put us on the back foot from the start. Struggling to build a solid partnership or maintain a steady run rate, the team worked hard to regain momentum. Max G provided a standout performance, anchoring the innings with a superb knock of 22 runs from 22 balls. His innings was filled with fantastic stroke play, finding gaps all around the field and keeping the scoreboard ticking. Despite his efforts, we were unable to build a substantial total, leaving us with a challenging task ahead as we moved into the bowling phase.

Knowing it would take an exceptional effort to restrict The Elms, the team approached the challenge with determination. Ben J set the tone early, delivering a maiden over to start our bowling attack in style. Nell then produced a fine moment, taking out middle stump with a well-placed delivery to claim a crucial wicket. Although we ultimately fell short, there were plenty of positives to take from the match. The team showed resilience, flashes of brilliance, and a willingness to learn essential qualities in our ongoing development. Every game is a valuable learning experience, and this contest was no exception. Well played, team
