U11 Rugby Festival at Millfield

This week the U11 King’s St Alban’s rugby team combined with King’s Hawford to compete at Millfield Prep School in a very exciting festival. Both teams displayed excellent team performances, which resulted in the boys winning every game they played! Jack, Mortimer and Connor played in the B team and Harry, William and Peter played in the A team. The boys had excellent games against Truro School, Millfield Prep School, Hugh Sexey and All Hallows.

Both teams moved well as a unit and offloaded the ball at crucial times in the games. The high energy and effort levels of the players enabled breakdowns in play to be successful and provided quick ball distribution. What was impressive about the King’s teams on the day was the consistent tackling technique to stop the opposition advancing and the effective passing skills at speed to maintain the momentum of attacks. What a great day it was! Well done boys!

U11A Hockey v Winterfold and Abberley

This was a hard match and Erin and Emily defended very well as they had most of the attack. Even though we went 2-0 down in the first half, the girls worked hard in the second half and we did have some chances. Eshal worked extremely hard in the midfield and Georgia was awarded ‘Player of the Match’ for some excellent goalkeeping.

U10A Hockey v Winterfold and Abberley

Our Under 10s were impressive on Wednesday and came away with two wins. In our first game, against Winterfold, we moved the ball well and spent quite a bit of our time in the attacking D. Well done to Helena, who scored a goal. In our second match against Abberley, we had less possession and our defence had to work hard to keep the ball out; Phoebe made a couple of impressive saves. Helena again was able to secure us the match with a runaway goal. Well done to Karla, who was awarded ‘Player of the Match’.

U11/U10C Hockey v Winterfold and Abberley

The girls had a wonderful afternoon of hockey at Abberley. We played Winterfold first, where we drew 0-0, but Evie N put in a feisty display, trying to push the ball up the field towards the goal. As we had honed our skilled in the first match, in the second against Abberley,  Ace converted a goal for us to win 1-0. Well done to Ana who was awarded ‘Player of the Match’.

U10 Rugby v Abberley

The U10s took on Abberley on Wednesday afternoon down at Slingpool fields. With the sun shining and the boys buzzing, we knew we were in for a brilliant match of rugby. We started very strongly, scoring a few early tries. In Games the previous Friday the boys had worked on rucking body position and technique; this showed during the first 10 minutes and the boys were fully control in that department. Theo S and Francis C were both extremely strong and determined in every tackle. Reuben A and Monty E did well with ball in hand and used their speed, strength and awareness to score a number of tries each. In an impressive move from King’s St Alban’s, shifting the ball from one side right across the pitch, Joel received the ball and put it down in the corner for a well-worked team-try.

This was a great afternoon of rugby and it is so pleasing to see the progress these boys are making from week to week.

U9 Rugby v Abberley Hall

We were able to take all of our Year 4 boys to Abberley on Tuesday afternoon. Despite the weather trying its best to put a dampener on the day, the boys carried on and got stuck in, with big smiles on their faces. The standard of rugby was super impressive and it was a brilliant afternoon, full of enjoyment and learning. The development Ben J is making is phenomenal; he demonstrated great technique and timing with his tackles. Brody S came onto the pitch and in the first 10 seconds of being on made one of the tackles of the match! Will B and Tommy D showed their dancing feet to go past the opponents with ease. Luca, Mark and Louie were powerful and determined with ball in hand, making good decisions about when to offload and pass.

These boys are a pleasure to take to a fixture and are showing brilliant progress.

U8 Rugby Festival at Winterfold

What a brilliant start of the season for the U8 rugby team, who participated in their first festival at Winterfold School. The boys played three games and developed their knowledge and understanding of the game very well in an exciting afternoon of tag-rugby. In the first game against RGS The Grange (Team 2), the boys worked well, learning how to defend with a flat line and, when in possession of the ball, how to attack the opposition’s territory effectively. Henry was excellent at finding space and gaps to run through with the ball, enabling him to score a try. Alban and Ben also made some great runs with the ball. The second game against Winterfold was an action-packed performance by both teams.

In the third game against RGS The Grange (Team 1), with weather conditions turning into heavy rain, the boys did a great job in developing how to run straight with the ball and displayed improvement in their passing skills. Alex had a fantastic run, almost scoring a try; Zack worked hard to tag the opposition and Jasper supported his team mates consistently. Well done boys!
