Immense pride at Athletics Championships

It is always a delight to return from a championships event and feel immense pride in our King’s St Alban’s children, knowing they have represented our school admirably. We had a long but rewarding day at the Mercia Prep Schools Athletics Championship at Stourport on Thursday this week. This event always serves as an excellent occasion for a day of highly competitive and enjoyable athletics. With 34 schools and over 900 competitors this year, it provided a fantastic experience for our children.

We took five Year Six pupils, each of whom had had to achieve the qualifying times and distances in their respective events. The first event for our team was the Under-12 Girls 1500m race, a straight final run by Helena C. Helena’s potential has long been evident, and she did not disappoint. Demonstrating maturity and class, she strategically tucked in behind the front group for most of the race before, with impeccable timing, she surged ahead and finished first in style.

Next, Evie competed in the Discus. Despite a nervous start, she delivered an impressive throw of 12.78m on her last attempt, securing seventh place out of 16. TJ and Theo then participated in the High Jump. Starting at a very competitive height of 1.10m, they found the event challenging. Nonetheless, well done to TJ for clearing 1.25m. Otto represented us in the Long Jump, achieving a distance of 3.43m. Although he was somewhat disappointed, having jumped further earlier in the season, his effort was commendable.

Helena wrapped up our afternoon in the 100m race. She performed excellently in the heats, securing first place and advancing to the Final. Despite the hot weather and feeling fatigued, Helena battled well and achieved third place.

We are now looking forward to taking Helena to the National Prep Schools’ Championships on the 3rd of July.
