King’s St Alban’s Conquers Normandy: A Year Six Adventure!

Reflecting on an extraordinary year packed with unforgettable moments, our recent trip to Normandy with our Year Six children stands out as a spectacular highlight. This wasn’t just any old educational excursion; it was a thrilling journey into French history, culture, and language. The memories we’ve created will undoubtedly last a lifetime!

Mont Saint-Michel: A Magical Expedition

Our visit to Mont Saint-Michel was nothing short of magical. Before arriving at this World Heritage Site, the children embarked on an adventurous sand walk with our guide, Woody. He captivated us with tales of tides, creek channels, and local wildlife, and even guided us through the thrilling experience of quicksand! Once on the mystical island, our young explorers climbed winding pathways, marvelled at medieval architecture, and felt as though they’d stepped back in time. The breath-taking views and rich history left an indelible mark on their imaginations, while the delectable ice-creams added a sweet note to their journey!

Honouring Heroes: Mulberry Harbour and Beyond

The 360 cinema overlooking the Mulberry Harbour offered a deeply moving tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of World War II heroes. Our pupils were riveted by the immersive displays at the Overlord Museum and the sweeping vistas of Omaha Beach. The visit to the American Cemetery, especially poignant with the forthcoming 80th anniversary of D-Day, instilled a profound sense of gratitude and respect for those who fought for our freedom, highlighting the enduring importance of remembrance and peace.

Chateau de la Baudonnière: An Interactive French Immersion

A true highlight of our trip was the immersive experience at Chateau de la Baudonnière. Engaging with native French animateurs, our children delighted in baking traditional French bread, mastering archery, and diving into the muddy fun of an assault course. These activities, brought to life by our enthusiastic French hosts, not only fostered a special King’s St Alban’s bond but also instilled a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie through language immersion.

Market Day Fun: Villedieu’s French Flair

Exploring the vibrant French market at Villedieu, our pupils eagerly ordered croissants, baguettes, and even indulged in the purchase of trendy bucket hats! This lively market experience allowed them to practise their French, gain independence, and build confidence in their language skills.

Exceptional Engagement and Enthusiasm

The triumph of this trip lies in the outstanding engagement and behaviour of our Year Six pupils. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and respect for the places visited and the people they met were truly commendable, making Mrs Kilbey exceptionally proud, as she explained: “I hope the memories created in Normandy will shape the children’s perspectives and broaden their horizons, fostering a lifelong love for languages, exploration, and discovery.”

Our Normandy adventure has been an invaluable, exhilarating experience, and we eagerly anticipate many more journeys that will continue to inspire and educate our pupils in thrilling new ways!
