King's St Alban's

11 November

Once upon a time… at the Avoncroft Museum!

The pupils of Year 1 at King’s St Alban’s had a fantastic day at Avoncroft Museum. The museum is located on the outskirts of Bromsgrove, just a short minibus ride from Worcester, and the visit aimed to enhance Year 1 learning on houses and homes during their ‘Once Upon a Time’ topic.  The museum is home to over 30 historic buildings, all of which have been rescued, dismantled and rebuilt at Avoncroft, and the children had plenty of opportunity to discover and learn.

The visit began with a hands-on retelling of the story of the Three Little Pigs, complete with props and puppets, which the children acted out brilliantly. The children demonstrated their knowledge from their recent science topic by describing the different materials used by the pigs to build their homes and they were able to describe the properties of each material. It is clear that the children have learnt a lot since they started in Year 1 back in September.

Having explored the 19 acres of wildflower meadow and beautiful period gardens, the cohort then had a tour of all of the different historical buildings on the site.  They were interested to learn about the different construction techniques such as wattle and daub and how the houses from the past differed from their homes today.  The children completed their visit by putting to the test what they had learned about building construction. Working in teams, they relished the challenge to build homes for the Three Little Pigs. The children listened beautifully, worked well together and asked some great questions to further their understanding.

Year 1 are excited to be returning to the classroom to delve a little deeper into their new topic; watch this space for exciting developments! Well done to all of the Year 1 pupils, who not only worked extremely hard throughout the trip but also behaved impeccably! You are fabulous ambassadors for King’s St Alban’s.
