Once upon a time Year One visited Avoncroft Museum
Year One had a fantastic day at Avoncroft Museum near Bromsgrove as part of their learning about houses and homes in their “Once Upon a Time” topic. The visit began with a hands-on retelling of the story of The Three Little Pigs, complete with props and puppets, which the children acted out brilliantly. They demonstrated their knowledge from their recent science topic by describing the different materials used by the pigs to build their homes, and they were able to describe the properties of each material. They then had to work in teams to construct shelters for the Little Pigs out of straw, sticks and rubber bricks. The children listened well to advice on how to improve the construction of their shelters so that the Big Bad Wolf would be unable to blow it down!
We then had a tour of all of the different historical buildings on the site. The children were interested to learn about the different construction techniques, such as wattle and daub, and how houses from the past differed from their homes of today. They were particularly interested to learn that homes in the past did not have running water or electricity and had outdoor toilets! We completed our visit by learning how some of the items found in our homes had changed over time, focusing in particular on the telephone. The children had lots of fun calling each other from telephone kiosks, and they were amazed that these ‘phones did not have touchscreens, games or cameras! Well done, Year One!
