Penguin Power: Year 5 English Learning with a Purpose
This week in English, Year 5 have been learning all about penguins and developing their research and non-fiction writing skills. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed exploring a range of different penguin species, learning about their habitats and discovering fascinating facts about penguin behaviour and adaptations.
Using a variety of information texts and online resources, pupils practised retrieving key facts, making notes and organising information clearly. They discussed what makes an effective information text and learned how to present facts in a clear and engaging way for a reader.
For homework, pupils put their learning into practice by creating eye-catching information posters for Penguin Awareness Day on Tuesday 20th January. The posters focused on the threats penguins face, such as climate change and pollution, as well as ways people can help to protect them. The finished posters showed great creativity and demonstrated a strong understanding of both the topic and the features of persuasive and informative writing.
It has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm, curiosity and care for the natural world, well done.
