U11 & U10 Athletics Meet
Monday saw the first school athletics meet of the season, to which King’s St Alban’s took fifteen pupils; we had a mix of pupils, some of whom had not competed in this sort of event before, so there was a little apprehension about what to expect. The weather was unseasonable to say the least, but this didn’t dampen spirits once the event got underway. Our children were a pleasure to be with and they represented the School brilliantly.
There were some real stand-out performances, with Helena running an amazing 1500m, finishing well ahead of the rest of her field. Archie, who is in Year Five, ran extremely well in his 75m race and finished second.
Rook ran a strong 600m race, finishing third, and Joshua ran well in the 75m and in his leg of the Relay. Otto competed in four different events and did well in all of them, but we were particularly impressed with the maturity he showed in his moving between the events. Emma competed in the High Jump for the first time and did well to reach a good height.
All of the children who competed should be congratulated on their fantastic efforts throughout the afternoon.
U11 Cricket Tournament at RGS
Our six U11 boys had a fabulous day at Flagge Meadow on Friday. We were very impressed with the standard of cricket, sportsmanship, and work rate from the King’s St Alban’s team, as through the day we played against RGS, Monmouth, Bablake, and Blue Coat Birmingham. Reuben A scored 25* and 27* in both the Blue Coat and Bablake games. He showed his cricketing prowess by hitting nine Fours and one Six. What was even more impressive was the way he played a range of different shots to find the gaps in the opponents’ field. Harry S also scored a brilliant 17* against Monmouth and Francis was brilliant behind the stumps and batted consistently all day. Jonas, Theo and Joel all bowled well and impressed with their line and length. In the final game of the day, Joel B made catch of the term, jumping high and taking a brilliant one-handed catch above his head. Well done, boys!
U9/8 Cricket v Hereford Cathedral School
Hereford Cathedral made their way over to Slingpool Walk for a well matched U9/8 match on Tuesday afternoon. HCS won the toss and elected to bowl first. Our target for the batting innings was to be clearer and louder with our communication and every single pair who batted for KSA demonstrated brilliant communication and running between the wickets. Ben D hit two fabulous shots, one on the leg side and one on the off side, and we finished the batting with a score of 240. HCS went in to bat and the bowling from everyone in the team was impressive, keeping a consistent line and length throughout. Nell bowled two overs for the team and only went for two runs, and Edith made an excellent catch in the field. The Hereford Cathedral team picked Ben D as the KSA Player of the Match. Well done!
U9/8 Cricket v Hereford Cathedral School
Two teams from Year Three and Four made the journey across the county border into Herefordshire to play their next cricket match against a team from Hereford Cathedral School on Tuesday.
Martha won the toss and duly elected to bowl and field first. The team from St Alban’s managed to restrict Hereford Cathedral to a respectable 261 runs for one wicket. Before batting, we discussed the importance of careful play and communicating effectively with their batting partner, in order to avoid losing careless wickets. They children obviously took this message on board as none of the children was caught or run out. The team batted so well that they scored a fantastic 291 runs and only conceded one wicket, which shows great progress. This meant that St Alban’s won the match by a comfortable 30 runs!
The children’s batting and bowling figures are as follows: Alban and Martha only conceded five runs when bowling, but scored 16 runs when batting. Pip and Zack scored 15 runs in bat and conceded 12 runs when bowling. Kasvicka and Millie conceded 11 runs when bowling and scored 10 runs in bat, whilst Henry and Dylan scored an impressive 19 runs when batting and conceded 13 runs when bowling. So a big “Well done” must go to all of these children who demonstrated good teamwork and represented St Alban’s really well!
U9/8 Cricket v Hereford Cathedral School
We won the toss and elected to put Hereford in to bat. The pupils are still learning the intricacies of bowling, but everyone bowled an overarm over and all showed improvement. Bertie and Dan showed the most consistency and Daisy managed to get a wicket. Hereford set a solid total and we knew we would have our work cut out to chase it down. Everyone did well, with nobody getting out, which has a significant effect at this level. The last pair of Greta and Elodie saw us home, managing to get the required runs with a few balls to spare. This was another good afternoon of cricket, with the team learning lessons and moving forward.
U9/8 Cricket v Hereford Cathedral School
The boys and girls had a wonderful afternoon of cricket over at Hereford on Tuesday. We won the toss and elected to field first, which provided a really good opportunity to practise our overarm bowling and trying to hit the target. There was a lot of coaching involved, as cricket is fairly new to most of the children, so we allowed them to stand a little closer if needed. All had a really good go and when Hereford hit the ball there was some excellent fielding. A little more work needs to be done on watching the game and knowing when and where to field the ball, but this will come in due course. Amber and Savannah were excellent in the field, concentrating and watching the ball so as to field it in. After the Hereford innings it was our turn to bat, and once again there was lots of coaching about hitting, game play, and when to run They were very successful at the single runs. All in all it was a wonderful afternoon of cricket followed by an excellent match tea. Well done all!
