Sporting Highlights from the Week

Tuesday 10th March 

U9/8 Netball tournament at RGS

The U9s showed fantastic determination at their tournament against The Downs, Winterfold, Bluecoat, RGS The Grange, Hereford and King’s Hawford. Playing outside in windy conditions made passing and shooting difficult, but the girls worked hard in every match, improving their movement, spacing and resilience as the afternoon went on. Despite not finding the net in the early fixtures, the team never let their heads drop and continued to put pressure on their opponents with some excellent defensive work and committed interceptions. 

Their perseverance was finally rewarded in the final game against King’s Hawford, where a well‑worked passage of play led to a confidently taken goal, securing a 1–0 win to finish the day on a high. 

A big well done to Tiegan, Hibah, Leen, Maren, Olivia and Molly for their teamwork, positive attitude and great sportsmanship throughout a challenging but very valuable learning experience. 

 

U9/8 Football v Winterfold, King’s Hawford and The Downs

The U8/9 boys delivered an excellent all‑round performance in their quadrangular fixture against Hawford, Winterfold and The Downs. They played with great spirit and teamwork throughout the afternoon, linking play confidently and working hard for one another. Fin was solid in goal, making several important saves to keep the team in control. On the right side, Theo and Ivan combined superbly, driving forward and gaining valuable ground. Hugo and Archie were relentless in their pressing, tackling strongly and repeatedly winning back possession. Charlie produced the moment of the day with a stunning long‑range strike from the halfway line. The highlight, however, was a beautifully crafted team move, calmly finished by Wilf to cap an impressive performance. 

U9/8 Football v Winterfold and King’s Hawford

The U9 B team showed tremendous spirit and determination on Tuesday afternoon as they took to the field at Winterfold School for two evenly balanced and highly competitive fixtures. In both games the boys demonstrated excellent teamwork, energy, and enthusiasm, rising to the challenge with real commitment. 

The opening match against Winterfold was a tight affair from start to finish, with both teams defending bravely and creating chances. The contest was ultimately decided by a single moment of brilliance; a superbly struck free‑kick from Winterfold that flew into the top corner.  Despite the narrow 1–0 defeat, the boys battled hard and showed impressive resilience throughout. 

The second game, against King’s Hawford, followed a similar pattern: end‑to‑end play, determined tackling, and some lovely passages of attacking football from the KSA team. Once again, the result hinged on a solitary goal, with King’s Hawford edging the match 1–0 after a very even and competitive encounter. The boys pushed right until the final whistle and were unfortunate not to find the equaliser their effort deserved. 

All of the players should feel proud of their performance, attitude, and sportsmanship across both matches. A special mention goes to Pheonix, who made a wonderful debut in his very first game for the school. He settled in superbly, worked tirelessly for his teammates, and made an excellent impression. 

Well done to the whole team for a spirited afternoon of football and for representing the school so brilliantly. 

U9/8 Football v Winterfold, King’s Hawford and The Downs

The U8/9C team put in a strong set of performances across their fixtures, showing great effort, teamwork, and attacking intent throughout the games. 

In the opening match against The Downs Malvern, the team were unfortunate to come away with a narrow defeat. Despite controlling the majority of possession and spending much of the game camped in the opposition half, the breakthrough proved difficult to find. The team moved the ball well and created pressure throughout, but The Downs Malvern managed to take one of their chances to edge the result. 

The second game saw a fantastic response as the team produced an outstanding performance to defeat Hawford 5–0. The attacking play really clicked, with goals coming from Akshay and Archie, while Ben led the scoring with an excellent hat-trick. The team passed the ball confidently and supported each other well across the pitch to secure a convincing victory. 

In the final match against Winterfold, the team battled hard but were unlucky to lose 1–0 in a closely contested game. Once again the effort and determination was clear, with the players continuing to push forward until the final whistle. 

Rory was excellent in goal throughout the games, making several important saves to keep the team in matches, while Edward played a key role in driving the team forward in attack and helping maintain pressure on opposition defences. 

Overall, it was a very positive set of performances from the team, who showed great energy, teamwork, and determination across all three matches. 

U11 Rugby 7s at Hymers 

King’s St. Alban’s and King’s Hawford once again joined forces to enter a Year 6 rugby team into Hymers College’s annual Sevens tournament on Tuesday 10th March. 

Following their participation in the Sevens tournament at Warwick School a couple of weeks previously, five King’s St. Alban’s pupils – Adam, Ben, Hugo, Max and Zack – made the long journey north to Hull to represent the school at this prestigious invitational event. With capacity for 14 schools, it was a great honour for the two King’s Worcester schools to be invited, and they were very proud to be the only team representing the Midlands. 

The day began with the group stages, where King’s faced six opponents: GSAL, Dame Allan’s, St Peter’s, Hill House, Birkdale and the hosts, Hymers College. After falling 0–1 behind to St Peter’s in their opening match, the boys showed tremendous perseverance to fight back and secure an impressive 4–2 victory. They continued this strong start with a composed win over Birkdale, before narrowly losing to GSAL. A hard-fought draw against Hill House, a loss to Dame Allan’s and another excellent win against Hymers College meant the team finished the group stage in second place, securing a spot in the Cup quarter-finals. 

Despite a determined performance, the boys were narrowly defeated in the quarter-final, which placed them into the Plate competition semi-finals against St Peter’s. Having already come from behind to beat St Peter’s earlier in the day, the team fought hard once again, but the early start and long day began to take its toll and they were unfortunately unable to progress further. 

Nevertheless, it was a hugely enjoyable and rewarding day for the team. The boys gained valuable experience of playing Sevens rugby in competitive match conditions ahead of their upcoming overnight trip to London for the prestigious Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens. A particular highlight for many of the boys was the opportunity to choose their own tea at the service station on the journey home! 

Well done to Adam, Ben, Hugo, Max and Zack, who represented King’s St. Alban’s superbly and demonstrated fantastic teamwork, passion and commitment throughout the day. 

Wednesday 11th March 

U11/10 Netball v Monmouth 

King’s St Alban’s U11 A travelled to Monmouth School for their latest netball fixture. It was a long but scenic journey, made all the more enjoyable by plenty of enthusiastic singing on the way! 

The match proved to be a closely fought contest from the start. In the shooting circle, Martha held her space well and shot accurately, scoring several important goals for King’s. Flo also made an immediate impact, scoring with her very first shot of the game, while Hannah moved superbly at GA, creating strong attacking opportunities. 

In the centre court, Elizabeth worked hard at Centre, moving the ball down the court and linking play between defence and attack. Her efforts earned her the attacking Opposition Player of the Match award. Kasvi also contributed well in the middle of the court, making some good passes. 

Defensively, Millie was outstanding at both GK and GD, making numerous interceptions and putting Monmouth’s attackers under constant pressure. Cerys and Bella worked hard in the WA and WD positions, supporting both attack and defence throughout the game. Romi marked her player tightly and made several impressive interceptions, earning her the defensive Opposition Player of the Match. 

After a competitive first half, King’s St Alban’s tightened up their throwing and passing, allowing them to pull away in the second half. 

A great team effort resulted in a well-deserved 7–4 victory for King’s St Alban’s. 

U11/10 Netball v Monmouth

The U10 netball team put in a fantastic performance against Monmouth, securing a brilliant 10–2 victory. From the first centre pass the girls showed great teamwork, energy, and determination, working hard across the court and supporting each other throughout the match. 

Defensively, Sophie R was outstanding. Her pressure in the circle made it extremely difficult for Monmouth to find space, and her interceptions and strong marking played a key role in keeping the opposition’s score low. 

In attack, shooters Imogen B and Elodie H worked brilliantly together in the circle, showing great movement and composure to convert their chances and keep the scoreboard ticking over. Their teamwork and accurate shooting helped the team build a strong lead. 

A special mention goes to Maddie E and Lillianna W, who were both awarded Player of the Match for their excellent performances and contributions to the team. 

Overall, it was a superb team effort and a well-deserved win. Well done girls! 

U11/10 Netball v Monmouth 

The U11s put in a good performance in their fixture against Monmouth, showing real determination and teamwork throughout a challenging match. From the first centre pass, it was clear Monmouth were strong, and their very tall defender made shooting opportunities extremely difficult. Despite our best efforts to drive forward and get in front, she intercepted confidently and prevented many attacking chances. 

However, the girls refused to be discouraged. They adapted well, worked hard to move the ball safely through the court and produced some lovely phases of play, particularly in the second half. The team’s resilience and willingness to keep improving were clear to see. 

It was wonderful to have Savannah back on court—she slotted straight in and brought great energy to the mid‑court. A special congratulations must also go to Becky, who was deservedly awarded Player of the Match for her relentless determination, constant movement and superb defensive pressure. She never stopped working and set a brilliant example for the whole team. 

Although the final score was a 0–4 loss, the girls should be proud of their attitude, teamwork and progress. Plenty of positives to build on for future matches! 

U11/10 Football at Winterfold 

It was brilliant for the team to be invited to the Matty Thacker Tournament at Winterfold, held to celebrate the life of a young pupil who sadly lost his life 15 years ago. 

KSA started well against Wolverhampton, playing some good football against a strong side. Max played the ball out well from defence, finding space for Adam to run into, and the game finished in a well-earned draw. 

Next was Warwick, where we switched off at times and against a strong team that proved costly. Against The Downs we were the better side and created chances but couldn’t find the net. 

We then faced Winterfold, the eventual winners, and produced a solid performance. Hugo, Nell and Thea were excellent at the back to keep them out and secure another draw. The final group game against Moor Park saw a strong team display, with Ben linking well with Jack, who finished the move for a deserved win. Zack also worked tirelessly throughout, putting defenders under pressure. 

KSA progressed to the Bowl semi-final against The Elms. Despite creating plenty of chances and piling on the pressure, the game finished 0–0. In golden goal, one ball through allowed The Elms their only shot on target, which unfortunately found the net. There were some disappointed faces, but as the team were reminded afterwards, moments like this are all part of sport. The players worked hard and represented themselves brilliantly throughout the day. 

Thursday 12th March 

U11/10 ESSA Gala 

Our U11 and U10 swimmers travelled to Warwick School to represent the school in the ESSA gala, competing in both freestyle and medley relays. It was an enjoyable afternoon of racing, with our swimmers giving their best efforts in every event. 

The team produced some very quick swims in the pool and showed great focus as they took on strong competition from other schools. Just as importantly, they supported one another throughout the gala, cheering loudly from the poolside and celebrating each race together. 

There were plenty of smiles throughout the afternoon, and the swimmers created a positive and encouraging atmosphere for their teammates. It was wonderful to see them racing hard, enjoying the experience, and representing the school so well. 

Well done to all the swimmers, you did the school proud.
