U11 Rugby Festival at Millfield School

On Saturday, the U11A rugby squad travelled to Millfield for a prestigious tournament played on the famous Gareth Edwards 1st XV pitch.  This was a fantastic opportunity for our boys to play against some different rugby schools and continue their rugby education.  On such occasions, the worry is that 10 year old boys might be daunted by the occasion, ‘freeze’ and not produce their A game.  Nothing could have been further from the truth on Saturday and all eleven boys rose to this memorable occasion and played their best rugby of the year.  During the first game, against Truro, the boys played with gusto, enthusiasm and without fear from the first whistle.  Arthur D scored a sparkling individual try on debut and six other boys got on the scoresheet.  Millfield, unsurprisingly, offered a sterner test in the second match as two good teams ‘left nothing in the changing room.’  Despite heavy first half territory, we were unable to cross the line and our defence stayed strong as Millfield tried to break the deadlock.  Constant pressure eventually led to a Millfield try but desperate, relentless, last-minute pressure led to a late try from James and a well-deserved draw.  Our final match was a real humdinger as we sought to reverse the result of last week against the touring St Mary’s, Sedbergh.  In a game of resolute defence, sensible kicking, good depth and opportunistic scoring, the boys played out of their skins.  A length of the pitch run by Oscar proved pivotable, Peter made good decisions whilst George looked dangerous throughout.  In the end, the boys fully deserved a 2-1 victory to end an enjoyable, rewarding and memorable afternoon at Millfield.  Very well done, boys!
