Year 3 Get Creative with Marble Maze Construction in DT

This term, Year 3 have been fully immersed in an exciting Design & Technology project, designing and building their very own marble mazes. This hands-on activity has been a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to develop a wide range of practical and creative skills, combining careful planning, problem-solving, and teamwork.

The project began with designing their mazes on paper. The children thoughtfully sketched out their ideas, considering the paths the marble would take, the complexity of the maze, and how to make it both challenging and fun. This stage encouraged them to think critically about space, angles, and the user experience.

Next came the construction phase, which involved a variety of practical skills. The pupils learned to measure accurately to ensure each piece of wood fit perfectly within their design. They then used handsaws to carefully cut the wood, developing their focus, coordination, and safe tool-handling techniques.

After cutting, the children practiced hammering nails to assemble the structure securely. This not only strengthened their fine motor skills but also introduced them to basic construction principles and the importance of stability in building.

To finish, the pupils used glue to reinforce joints and add finishing touches, demonstrating patience and precision. Throughout the process, they had to adapt their plans and problem-solve when things didn’t go exactly as expected, fostering resilience and creative thinking.

The completed marble mazes are fantastic examples of how design, craftsmanship, and perseverance come together to create a functional and entertaining final product. It’s been wonderful to see the children take pride in their work, celebrate their successes, and learn from the challenges.

Well done, Year 3, on a brilliant DT project that combined imagination with real-world skills!
