Year 4 Explore the Marvels of Movement in ‘Locomotion’ Topic

As part of our Locomotion topic this term, Year 4 have been delving into the fascinating inner workings of the human body, discovering how our bones and muscles work together to help us move.

We kicked off our learning by exploring the human skeleton, identifying key bones such as the skull, spine, femur, and ribcage. The children were enthusiastic about using scientific vocabulary and gaining a deeper understanding of how each bone contributes to movement, support, and protection.

Building on this knowledge, we put our medical hats on and examined 18 real X-ray images. Some showed healthy bones, while others revealed breaks and dislocations. Acting as junior doctors, the children eagerly identified bones, diagnosed the issues, and recommended treatments, from slings and splints to rest and physiotherapy.

Throughout the topic, Year 4’s curiosity and enthusiasm have been truly impressive. They asked thoughtful questions about how X-rays work, what happens when bones break, and how the body heals. It’s clear we have some budding doctors, nurses, and radiologists in our classroom already!
