Year 6 Investigate Forces with Paper Spinners

This week in science, Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed a hands-on investigation exploring air resistance and gravity by designing and testing their own paper spinners.

Working in pairs, the children created spinners and timed how long they took to fall from various heights. This practical experiment introduced the concept of air resistance, encouraging pupils to think scientifically about the factors affecting the speed of descent. With each test, they were challenged to modify their designs, adjusting the size, shape, or weight of the spinners to make them fall more quickly or more slowly, depending on their hypothesis.

Throughout the investigation, pupils demonstrated excellent teamwork and problem-solving skills, carefully recording their timings, discussing patterns in their results, and calculating the mean average for each height. Not only did this strengthen their scientific understanding, but it also provided a fantastic opportunity to apply their mathematical knowledge in a real-world context.
