Dancing Through the Decades
Last Friday evening saw The Barn bursting at the seams for back-to-back performances of this year’s Dance Showcase extravaganza. The show, entitled Dancing Through the Decades treated the audience to an anthology of music and movement that took them on a journey from the 1920s to the present day. One of our Year 6 classes opened the show with a cheeky, yet classy, Charleston, which led into the first of our Year 4 groups swinging into the 1930s by performing to Louis Prima’s Sing. Sing, Sing. The offering from the 1940s could only have been represented by one song and it was great see our Year 3 GIs Boogie and Woogie to the Andrew’s Sisters’ Bugle Boy. Year 5’s Jailhouse Rock tribute to The King was seriously rock and roll and the second of the Year 6 groups showed a lot of soul with James Brown’s, I Feel Good.
After watching his own class offer their storming homage to Eurovision, disco and beards with ABBA’s Voulez-Vous, Mr Stigant, who compered the evening, enjoyed 5AMW transporting him back to Portsmouth Guildhall in 1983 with a magical monochrome version of The Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams. 6SH then came over all hip-hop, as they strutted their stuff to the theme from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air; whilst Dance Mix clearly knew how good this evening of dance was going to be as they performed to their chosen track, I Got a Feeling.
The staff dance is always a highlight. This year was no different, as the group who had been dubbed the “Strictly (un)Professionals”, defied their tag by masterfully bringing to the stage a cornucopia of street dance, with a little salsa thrown in for good measure. Our new Dance Coach, Miss Lusted has set the bar high and we are now looking forward to seeing her incredible choreography in future productions and shows.
