Sport Round up This Week

U8 Cricket vs. The Downs

Miss Lake’s U8 girls delivered a fantastic team performance on Tuesday afternoon. Captain Bonnie won the toss and chose to field first. Brilliant fielding led to two Downs batters being run out in the first two balls. Maddie bowled beautifully, showing great improvement, while Isla impressed with her speed and Georgina worked hard in the field. In the second innings, Maddie and Bonnie batted well, with strong communication and a superb boundary from Bonnie. The Downs awarded Batter of the Match to Maddie and Bowler of the Match to Bonnie. A great afternoon of cricket – well done, girls!

U8 and U9 Cricket vs The Downs

The U8 and U9 cricket teams enjoyed some extremely close and competitive home fixtures with The Downs on Tuesday of this week. Mr Hodgkins’s team played brilliantly in a game that went right down to the final few balls. Fielding first, the Hawford children bowled superbly and, despite not taking a wicket, were extremely accurate and economical with their deliveries. The pick of the bowlers was Emily G who went for just three runs from her two overs, including an impressive maiden over. Gabe C, Bella W and William C also demonstrated improved technique and efficiency in their bowling.

What was to follow was an epic run chase by the Hawford batters. Throughout the innings, the score ticked away at a very similar rate to that of The Downs’ batting innings, thanks to some powerful ball striking from Yaseen A, Charlie P-W and Noah P, who produced the shot of the day with a superb straight drive back past the bowler for four runs. With three overs to play, the final partnership of Billy K and Emily G required 18 runs to win. This was still the case with just two overs to go. Billy then took the game to the bowlers with several impressive shots for 4. With just two balls remaining, Hawford still required 4 runs. Billy then struck another superb boundary on the leg side to complete the excellent run chase. A great game played by both teams.

U11 Boys Cricket vs Winterfold

On Wednesday afternoon, the U11 boys cricket teams played hosts to two teams from Winterfold. Unfortunately, following just eight overs, the rain rolled in and put pay to the remainder of the matches. Mr Hodgkins’s team had started their batting innings in encouraging style with Noah L and George C playing several impressive shots to score 25 runs off their three overs. This was ably backed up by Freddie B and Jude R who tested the fielders with some intelligent running to add a further 14 to the score card. Just as Ben B and Charles N were settling in at the crease the inclement weather came in and put a halt to the momentum that they were building. Sadly, the rain did not subside and so the match was ended prematurely.
