Year 5 Bring the Chocolate Room to Life

This week in English, Year 5 were inspired by their Creative ConneXions song, Pure Imagination, and embarked on a wonderfully creative writing journey. The excitement began with a surprise letter from Willy Wonka himself, inviting the children to redesign his famous Chocolate Room.

To prepare for the challenge, pupils explored an extract from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, focusing on how Roald Dahl uses rich and imaginative description to bring the setting vividly to life. They also drew inspiration from a range of sources, including film adaptations, stage productions and even LEGO creations, helping to spark their own ideas.

Using this inspiration, the children designed and illustrated their own unique Chocolate Rooms. Their imaginative creations included skittle stepping stones, marshmallow mushrooms, candy cane trees, towering chocolate mountains, red velvet cake walls and even gingerbread houses for the Oompa Loompas. Each design was bursting with colour, creativity and originality.

The pupils then annotated their work, carefully selecting and applying a range of descriptive language techniques, including powerful adjectives, similes, personification and alliteration, to enhance their writing and bring their ideas to life on the page.

To round off this exciting learning experience, and with Easter just around the corner, the children enjoyed sharing and tasting some chocolate as they celebrated their fantastic designs.

A truly imaginative and engaging week of learning, well done Year 5!
