Year 6 Dive into the World of Rivers

Year 6 have been developing their geographical knowledge as they explore their exciting new topic on rivers. Their curiosity has been flowing, with the children asking lots of thoughtful questions as they investigate rivers in the UK and around the world.

Using atlases and online maps, the children have been locating major rivers, tracing their courses and identifying their sources and mouths. They have explored fascinating questions about the River Nile, including where it begins, which countries it flows through and where it eventually meets the sea.

The children have also investigated the lengths of some of the world’s longest rivers, discovering that even geographers do not always agree on their exact measurements! This is because identifying a river’s true source can sometimes be challenging. They were also surprised to learn that not all rivers flow into a sea or ocean; some empty into lakes, join other rivers or flow into inland basins.

A particular focus has been exploring the intricate networks of tributaries that feed into mighty rivers such as the Nile and the Amazon. This has helped the children appreciate why explorers throughout history have faced such challenges when attempting to trace these vast waterways back to their sources.

To round off their learning, the children have enjoyed a lively game of Rivers Top Trumps, comparing rivers from around the world and putting their growing geographical knowledge to the test.

Year 6 have shown fantastic curiosity and enthusiasm as they navigate their way through this fascinating topic. We look forward to seeing where their geographical explorations take them next!
