Year 3 Become Scientists, Geographers and Historians

It has been another busy week for Year 3, with the children embracing their roles as scientists, geographers and historians through a range of exciting, hands-on learning activities!

The children have been putting on their scientist hats to investigate how different drinks can affect our teeth. They have been eagerly observing our eggshell experiment, arriving in the classroom each morning keen to see what changes have taken place. So far, the Ribena and orange juice appear to have had the biggest impact, leaving the eggshells discoloured and beginning to disintegrate. Yuk! This fascinating investigation is helping the children understand why looking after our teeth and thinking carefully about what we drink is so important.

In Geography, the children became map-makers as they explored the KSA grounds, creating a bird’s-eye-view plan of the school. They then investigated how the land around us has changed over time. The children were amazed by photographs shared by Mrs Atkinson showing the area outside the Mill Street gate before the Pre-Prep building was constructed. They were astonished to discover that the grounds once belonged to a pub and its car park! It was a wonderful opportunity to see how places change and develop over time.

In History, the children took on the role of detectives as they worked together to investigate different types of historical evidence. Their challenge was to sort a series of statements into two categories: primary evidence, which comes from the time of an event, and secondary evidence, which is created afterwards.

Although the task proved tricky at times, the children showed fantastic teamwork and perseverance as they discussed their ideas and listened carefully to one another. The activity was a brilliant demonstration of our KSA characteristics: Curiosity, as they questioned and considered the evidence; Caring, as they listened respectfully and supported their classmates; and Confidence, as they shared their ideas and worked together to solve the challenge.

Well done Year 3 for a fantastic week of investigation, discovery and learning across the curriculum!
