A Busy Week of Learning in Year 1

Year 1 have enjoyed a fantastic week of learning across English, Maths and Science. After listening to the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the children took part in a fun hot-seating activity. One child took on the role of Goldilocks and was questioned by the Three Bears about her actions. Should she have entered their house and helped herself to their belongings? The children came up with some brilliant questions and showed great thought as they explored Goldilocks’ behaviour and considered whether her actions were right or wrong.

In Maths, the children used conkers to explore number and comparison. They wrote their names on individual conkers and counted how many letters were in each name. They then put their mathematical skills to the test by comparing their results, identifying names with equal numbers of letters and working out which had greater or fewer letters. A lovely hands-on way to practise their maths vocabulary.

In Science, the children became scientists as they predicted and tested different materials to discover which were waterproof. Their mission was to help Fudge Bear and his friends prepare for a trip to the rainforest in Costa Rica, finding materials that would keep them dry. The children put their predictions to the test during Forest School, with some materials proving successful and others letting the water straight through!

Unfortunately, poor Fudge Bear is still rather soggy, as his cotton clothing failed to keep him dry and warm. Year 1 have certainly discovered the importance of choosing the right materials for the job!

Well done Year 1 for another week of fantastic learning, curiosity and discovery!
