A busy week on the sports pitches.

U11A Rugby v Hymers College

The U11s have worked hard so far this half term and their rugby has shown significant improvement. On Wednesday afternoon we came up against a very strong and well organised Hymers College team. We started slowly and conceded a number of soft tries but fought back and made some big tackles. Harry B scored a fabulous try, where we hit the ball at pace and ran a fabulous line through the opposition’s defence.  The boys showed resilience and determination to keep going until the final whistle. We can take a lot from this game, and it has underlined a few things we can work on for the rest of the term.

U11 A Netball v Hymers College

The Year 6 girls had their first netball match of the year on Wednesday against a touring school, Hymers College. The girls excelled, having not played seven-a-side netball before; they moved around the court well and intercepted many balls. The movement up the court was excellent, but they must remember to jump for the balls. In both circle ends there was excellent shooting and defending. While we didn’t win the match, the effort of all the girls was impressive and we look forward to a super netball term. Well done to Emily H for be recognised as Opposition Player of the Match.

U11B Netball v Hymers College

It was fantastic to see all of the Year 6 girls involved in netball fixtures on Wednesday. For some of the new King’s St Alban’s girls, it was their first ever netball match. Hymers College, on tour from Hull, were a very friendly team and, while it was a closely fought contest, the game was a great learning experience. As the match progressed, King’s St Alban’s began to mark more tightly and made lots of interceptions. Well done to Sienna C who was the Opposition Player of the Match. It was a super afternoon in the autumn sunshine and the girls showed lots of promise for the Spring Term, when there will be more netball fixtures.

RGS U10 Hockey Tournament

The Year 5 Girls had a very busy afternoon of hockey on Wednesday at the RGS Tournament. Eleven schools entered the tournament, and it was split into two groups. We were in the group with six teams, so had five matches to play through the afternoon. Unfortunately, we only took eight players as Lily E was unable to play, and we missed her.

The girls impressed from the start with some real energy on the pitch, as Karla and Helena repeatedly ran the length of the pitch without tiring. Phoebe made numerous saves throughout the afternoon and kept the results close throughout the tournament. We achieved our first victory against Malvern St James even though they created a number of goal scoring opportunities during the game. The second game we won was against The Downs. This was a much tighter game, with the first goal being scored by Karla; they then scored a goal to level with us. In the last minute of the game, we scored a second goal, which came from a beautiful move up the line by Lottie and a well-timed cross to Helena, who sent it home with pace. This was a great afternoon of hockey!

U10A v Hymers College

What a fantastic game the U10 boys had this week, playing on the first team pitch against a very strong team from Hymers College. The team displayed a very resilient performance, not giving up until the final whistle. Theo and Otto worked well in defence, making decisive tackles; Rook made some great runs going forward, and Francis had another fine game.

Sam scored an excellent try, finding space out on the left wing, and just managed to get cross the try line in the corner before being tackled. Rueben made a darting run, found a gap, and scored a well-deserved try. There was a time late on in the game when the boys almost let their heads go down after a very well-worked try by Hymers College, but the boys dug deep, kept their concentration, and in the dying seconds of the game, Monty powered through to score an equalising try. What an end this was to a fantastic half term of rugby!

U9 Rugby Festival at Winterfold

The U9 boys looked to build on what has been a really successful half term of rugby. They are all improving from week to week and are working hard in their Games lessons and clubs. We played three fixtures against King’s Hawford, Winterfold and RGS The Grange, producing really good rugby throughout the whole afternoon. Harry B and Harry D made well-timed tackles to keep our defence tight. Will B and Louie F showed determination and speed to make a number of great runs through the opposition’s defence. After the three group games, we decided to play one last game against Winterfold and what a fantastic game of rugby this was. We demonstrated good organisation and strong tackling in defence; this led to making four tackles right on our try line to stop a Winterfold try. We also used the ball much better this match and made a few good passes out wide to enable us to run into space. Well done on a brilliant half term of rugby!

U8 & U9 Hockey v Winterfold

On Tuesday we took all our U8 and U9 Girls over to Winterfold. We divided them into four teams and played round-robin tournaments with both age groups. The girls were excited to be playing matches and we were very impressed to see the progress they have made so far this term.  In Year 3 we have some very tenacious players, with Edith and Romi making numerous goal scoring opportunities and Martha and Nell showing great determination in the tackles. One of our focus points for the games has been to keep the ball on your stick until you can see the pass, and Millie demonstrated this beautifully, taking the ball up the wing until she could see a player to whom to pass.
In the Year 4 team Sophia was superb in converting the opportunities into goals and Mia was never-ending in her determination when tackling.
