A Delicious Maths Lesson for Year 4

Maths came to life in Year 4 recently during an engaging lesson on equivalent fractions. Armed with curiosity and a cake as a teaching tool, our pupils discovered the magic of fractions in the most enjoyable way possible, through hands-on learning and a sweet treat at the end!

The lesson began with a simple question: “What is a fraction?” From there, pupils explored how fractions can represent parts of a whole. A cake was used to make this concept tangible. Our two year 4 classes eagerly watched as the cake was first cut into two equal halves, demonstrating how one half represents one out of two equal parts. The real fun began when the cake was cut into smaller pieces. Each half was divided into quarters, and the pupils were interested to see how a half is the same as two quarters. Taking it further and cutting the cake into eighths, illustrated how two quarters is equal to four eighths.

By physically dividing the cake, pupils could see the relationships between these fractions. We asked thoughtful questions, such as “Would this work with other shapes too?” and “Can we keep dividing forever?” Their curiosity showed just how effective and engaging this lesson was.

Of course, no cake-based lesson would be complete without a taste test! After ensuring everyone had grasped the key concepts, each pupil enjoyed a piece of the cake we had worked so hard to divide.

We hope this lesson serves as a spark for continued exploration. Parents, ask your children what they learned and perhaps even try dividing a treat at home!
