A Magical Carol Service to Remember
From the beautiful organ music played before the service by Mr Freestone to the first, haunting notes of the opening solo to ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ (sung by Y6 Chorister, Pip), it was clear that this year’s Carol Service was going to be something magical
The timeless Christmas story told through readings, carols and prayers, against the backdrop of Worcester Cathedral, made for a memorable occasion for everyone. Confident, clear reading from all the children (some as young as Y3) enabled us to hear every word.
The music was beautiful, and the congregation enjoyed singing favourite traditional carols such as Ding Dong Merrily and Hark the Herald, as well as being introduced to more unusual pieces by the choirs. The calypso style ‘Maracas in the Manger’ and samba version of ‘We Three Kings’ (a world premiere, no less!) got everyone’s feet tapping. Congratulations to Pip (Y6) and Max M (Y5) on their spirited performance of the saxophone parts in this lively carol. The beautiful and unusual arrangement of the classic words, ‘See amid the winter snow’, accompanied by Mrs Atkinson on the flute, brought tears to a few eyes.
A highlight for lots of people was the choristers superb performance of Michael Head’s ‘Little road to Bethlehem’. Our choristers work very hard and have a packed schedule in the run up to Christmas. It was a real treat to hear them sing in their ‘home’ environment of the Cathedral.
This was a really super occasion, and got everyone in the mood for the Christmas festivities. Thanks to the generosity of the King’s St Alban’s community, we were also able to raise £235 for our chosen charity, Breakthrough T1D.
Well done everyone!
