A whole day of Forest School fun for Year 2
Year 2 enjoyed a full day of Forest School on Friday. Everyone was looking forward to spending the day outside, as long as the weather was kind! Our luck must have been in, as the weather was beautiful and, by the afternoon, the children were even feeling warm in their waterproofs!
On this occasion Year 2 made keyrings to take home. These involved many careful skills: first, the children designed what they would like to add to the front of their keyring, keeping it on a Forest School theme. They then sawed their wood to size, used sandpaper to sand the edges and create a smooth finish. They finished the morning by drilling a hole to attach the ring to the fob. In amongst all the hard work and tool use the children were busy building, creating and playing.
After a quick retreat inside for lunch, it was soon time for the afternoon session. The children used a pyrography rod to burn their designs onto their wooden keyring. This was a new skill and one which required the close eyes of an adult.
To finish the day, the fire was lit and everyone gathered round for some popcorn. The children loved listening to it sizzle in the pan before guessing when it was about to pop. At the end of the day, everyone headed back inside, proudly carrying their keyrings and suitably muddy from a day spent outdoors!
