Civil War brought to life
This week, as part of their studies of the English Civil War, Year Six stepped back in time in Worcester Cathedral’s Undercroft Learning Centre. Pupils were able to discuss the causes of the English Civil War and deepened their understanding of its religious, political and financial aspects.
A tour of the city, which included views of the battle sites from Fort Royal Hill and the house from which Charles II escaped, opened their eyes to the history that is around them every day and to the significant role that Worcester played in this period of English history.
A definite highlight of the day took place on the West Lawn of Worcester Cathedral, where passers-by were greeted by charging pike-men in full battle voice, led by their Drill Sergeant. It was wonderful to see all of Year Six fully embracing their acting skills.
To conclude the day, the pupils gathered in the Lady Chapel of Worcester Cathedral to re-enact through freeze-frames the chronology of the Battle of Worcester in 1651.
The children had a fantastic day learning about the Civil War, and our thanks go to the staff and volunteers of the Education Department of Worcester Cathedral. They were brilliant ambassadors for the school.
